I've been so inspired by the work of Seth Apter, of The Altered Page, that I just had to create my own altered pages. My two attempts veered more into the mixed media / collage categories. Still, I liked the way they turned out. I certainly learned a lot. I love the layering process. I will definitely be doing more of these...they are a lot of fun!
Hope (9 x 9" Mixed Media)
"'Hope' is the thing with feathers—
That perches in the soul—
And sings the tune without the words—
And never stops—at all—..."
I've used collage images, lace, other ephemera, beeswax and acrylic paint on heavy watercolor paper.
As I made this piece, I thought about hope. The little pianist here is performing in a building that was recently bombed and abandoned. Even in such extremity -- there is beauty, there is hope. There is hope in every sunrise, in every child's eyes, in music and art, in every new adventure. On the other hand, there is a dangerous side of Hope. If we are clinging to our hopes for the future, we may well be missing out on the present moment. Come back to the present moment and hear the delicate melody...the brave piano solo...and then feel in the stillness -- that thing with feathers perching in our souls.
The Ascension (Mixed Media on paper 18x28")
I did this piece more as an experiment than anything else, but several people really liked it, so I went ahead and listed it on Etsy. I'm selling prints to keep everything affordable. I hope someone likes it enough to buy one! :)
This is easy and fun to do. Why not try one yourself? Let your inner artist come out and play! It's good for the soul.
